Sucking from our mother’s breast as a baby—we need it—dependent on one thing to survive. Then we wean off to another dependency—a pacifier, and so on.
The paths expand, along with it, our options. We all choose our addictions: Food, phone apps, drugs, caffeine, alcohol, love, sex, exercise, gambling, you name it. The brain runs on the highs we get to survive and stay stimulated. Give up one thing, you’ll find another.
I dislike when people talk about the “addictive gene.” We all have it, inherently, as humans. Your opinion simply decides which is worse than the other.
But don’t forget, it’s never ending.
